The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the shooting deaths of two Burwell residents, including a toddler, as a case of murder-suicide, a spokeswoman said.
The dead were identified as Christopher Melling, 31, and his daughter, Aimee Melling, who would have been 3 at the end of January, said Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall. A single firearm was discovered at the scene, Crandall said.
The bodies were discovered Tuesday afternoon when Burwell police gained access to a house to conduct a welfare check. Concerned neighbors had reported no recent activity at the home.
Autopsies have been scheduled for later this week, Crandall said. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is assisting police and the State Patrol in the investigation.
Burwell is a town of about 1,200 residents in the Sand Hills region, about 100 miles northwest of Grand Island.
