It took a win in the last match of the day last year for Omaha Skutt to make sure it was the only school to ever win its own tournament.
That streak continued in much different fashion Saturday.
The Class B No. 1 SkyHawks crowned six individual champions to easily win the Jesse Greise SkyHawk Invitational, outscoring runner-up Omaha Burke, Class A’s ninth-ranked team, by more than 100 points.
“We wrestled really well,” Skutt coach Brad Hildebrandt said. “The kids had great focus today. It seems like when things get rolling, they really get rolling.”
Skutt had winners in Korbin Meink (106), Brian Peska (120), Bailey Vanderpool (138), Jake Walker (152), Landon Gotschall (160) and Nick Hollins (170).
All six are in the Class B rankings, with Meink and Peska No. 1 in their respective weight classes.
Walker, No. 2 in Class B, was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler after his 4-0 win over Patrick Kelley of Omaha Burke, who is the top-ranked 152-pounder in Class A.
Hildebrandt lauded the effort of his seniors, who he says solidified both the lineup and leadership of a program that has won 15 of the last 16 Class B titles.
“The last couple of weeks our seniors have really taken control of our situation,” Hildebrandt said. “With leadership and getting everyone on the same page, they’ve kind of gotten us going in the right direction down the stretch.”
Hildebrandt pointed to Hollins, who is ranked second at 170 and beat No. 3 Brandon Shuler of Plattsmouth for the title Saturday.
“He’s really stepped up his game,” Hildebrandt said. “He’s really opening up and finding out that he can really wrestle.”
Burke’s three winners were top-ranked 145-pounder Jared Green, James Simpson at 195 and Andrew Pistillo (285).
Class B No. 8 Plattsmouth had two champions in Zach Prall, who is ranked No. 1 at 113, and 126-pounder Andrew Null. The Blue Devils’ Shuler was also awarded the tournment’s memorial scholarship.
Matt Falewitch of Omaha Creighton Prep (132), Omaha Central’s Kolbie Foster (182) and DeTeren Smith of Boys Town (220) were the day’s other champions.
