A woman was injured and two horses were killed Sunday night when the animals wandered onto Interstate 29 in southwest Iowa and were struck by the woman's SUV.
The crash occurred about 6:40 p.m. just north of exit 20 off I-29, near Thurman, Iowa. Thurman is about 40 miles southeast of Omaha.
The Iowa State Patrol said Jessica Strope, 24, of Addison, N.Y., was southbound on I-29 when the two horses crossed in front of her 2003 Nissan Murano. The horses apparently had broken loose from somewhere nearby.
Strope was unable to stop, the patrol said, and her SUV struck the horses before the vehicle veered off the road into the I-29 median.
Strope was taken in serious condition to Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha by a Tabor, Iowa, rescue squad. She was listed in fair condition at the med center on Monday.
The horses died on impact with the SUV, the patrol said. The animals may have been involved in at least two other traffic accidents in Fremont County on Sunday, the patrol said. Those crashes did not result in any injuries.
