With the formality and main-stage spectacle of “The Nutcracker” in its rear-view mirror, Ballet Nebraska is turning its attention to something quite a bit different.
The company launches its new Encore Series this Saturday night with “Duets,” a program of works selected around the theme of relationships.
Most of the ballets feature a pair of dancers. A notable exception is choreographer Mikhail Fokine's 1905 work “The Dying Swan,” a solo set to music by Camille Saint-SaŽns, which Ballet Nebraska artistic director Erika Overturff said is intended to create a bond between dancer and viewer.
The series takes place in a new performance space called Encore, bringing audience members into an intimate, informal atmosphere. Ballet Nebraska artists will introduce each work, and audience members will have an opportunity to meet the performers.
The new series continues March 29 with “New Works,” featuring new pieces choreographed by Ballet Nebraska dancers and previews of two ballets in an upcoming main-stage production.
