Nebraska falls short against Florida State

Las Cruces, N.M. — This time there were no late-inning heroics.

No. 12 Florida State eliminated any potential for drama Sunday with three runs in the fifth inning to secure a 5-1 upset of ninth-ranked Nebraska at the Hotel Encanto Invitational.

On Friday the Huskers rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Seminoles 4-3. But this time FSU ace Lacey Waldrop cooled of Nebraska’s hot bats by allowing just four hits, and the run the 3-1 Huskers scored was unearned.

Nebraska had double-digit hit totals in its first three games. The run the Huskers did score was unearned thanks to a Florida State error.

Taylor Edwards was hit by a two-out pitch before Hailey Decker hit a chopper to third that produced a wild throw to third base by FSU’s Briana Hamilton. That moved Edwards to third, and she scored on the next pitch when Kylee Muir singled to right.

Florida State (4-1) scored all five of its runs with two outs. The most damage was done by second baseman Tiffani Brown, who ripped a bases-loaded triple to the gap in left-center that pushed the score to 5-1.

Nebraska returns to action Friday when the travel to Houston to play five games in three days at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.
