Young led Omaha-based Union Pacific, the nation’s largest railroad and one of the city’s largest employers, as chief executive during the first decade of the 21st century, when sales, profits and capital investment soared. Omaha native Young, 61, died about two years after taking leave for treatment of pancreatic cancer.
Young is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughter, Sarah Wagstaff; sons Jim Young Jr. and Matthew Young; brothers Ron, Don and Rick Young; a sister, Debbie Young; and two grandchildren.
The family has requested that contributions be made to the University of Nebraska Foundation’s Jim Young Pancreatic Cancer Research Memorial Fund.
