Omaha Westside coach Derek Fey has been chosen to head the program at the College of St. Mary.
Fey has spent six years as a teacher at Westside, where he served as the boys cross country coach and the distance coach for the girls track team.
Under Fey’s direction, Westside’s cross country team grew from 18 runners his first year to a school-record 45 runners in 2013. The team also has won two district titles under Fey.
“I’m extremely excited to join the College of St. Mary family,” Fey said. “Coaching at the college level is very gratifying and I’m looking forward to working with a great group of student-athletes.”
Fey was a two-time NAIA All-American in cross country and track at Dana College. He won the Omaha Marathon in 2013. In 2011, Fey published a book about running called We Were Born to Run.
CSM won the 2013 MCAC championship and finished 26th at the NAIA national meet. The Flames return their top seven runners.
