Fans of cable TV's “Burn Notice” can thank Omaha-based Proxibid for the opportunity to beat the winter blues with an online auction of 455 costume items and props from the USA Network spy series.
Proxibid is administering the March 1 online auction for J. Sugarman Auction Corp. of Pembroke Park, Fla. The two organizations got together in August 2013 to sell other items related to the TV show.
“If you're a fan, you can't necessarily get on a flight and go to Florida to the auction, so that's where we come in,” said Dana Kaufman, director of communications for Proxibid.
Kaufman said both “Burn Notice” auctions have brought in some of the highest traffic levels in company history. Proxibid launched in 2001 and now handles more than $2 billion in annual inventory.
An announcement posted by the show's Facebook page on Feb. 19 resulted in 32,000 requests for the auction catalog. In all, the catalog has been viewed about 280,000 times.
The highest-priced item on the block for the March 1 auction is a pair of Oliver Peoples sunglasses worn by lead character Michael Westen, portrayed by Jeffrey Donovan. The signature shades have been pre-bid to $1,500.
So far, users have placed more than 8,300 pre-bids for items, Kaufman said.
Less-spendy items on the block include a handful of Tommy Bahama shirts worn by Bruce Campbell, who plays Sam Axe on the show, and various costume items from the show's other characters.
Users can pre-bid until the auction begins at 11 a.m. on March 1.
