A new art installation at Village Pointe shopping center aims to take shoppers under the sea.
The center and the Omaha Creative Institute have collaborated with local textile artist Dori Settles to transform a public art sculpture in the middle of its Main Street roundabout — “Reaching” by Peggy Ritschel — into something new.
Settles’ view on the existing artwork with its extending “arms” reminded her of tentacles or seaweed and inspired her to envision an undersea theme, which she named “Aquarium at the Pointe.”
Textile mediums including yarns, fabrics and plastics along with netting and quilted sections were juxtaposed atop the existing sculpture arms to represent sea creatures, including jellyfish and octopuses, in an under-the-ocean scene.
“Aquarium at the Pointe” is expected to remain in place through April. A special gathering in celebration of the art installation will be scheduled later, probably in mid-March, at the center, 168th Street and West Dodge Road.
