A week ago, Creighton was soaring. The Bluejays had won 11 straight games, including a 102-74 pasting of Illinois State on Feb. 1. They were inching toward a top-10 ranking, both in the polls and the RPI. The guys who forecast March Madness had Creighton a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. »

The Shockers can smell the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title that just eluded them a season ago. A victory over the Bluejays would put Wichita State two games up in the standings with three games to play.

The Bluejays plan to use the rare four-game softball series, with doubleheaders Saturday at noon and Sunday at 11 a.m., to parcel out playing time to as many Bluejays as possible. "That's one of the goals this weekend," Creighton coach Brent Vigness said. "We may start four to five different people the second game."

    Premium ContentPremium ContentClick on Premium Content on the Featured navigation bar for information.Creighton is counting on Gregory Echenique to slow down a player on a rampage when the Bluejays face Wichita State on Saturday. Shockers center Garrett Stutz has averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds in the past five games. Overall, the 7-foot Stutz leads Wichita State with averages of 14.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

    Nelson’s career-best not enough for Jays

    A late run by Evansville and cold shooting by the Creighton women sunk the Bluejays 48-45 on Thursday. Creighton didn't make a field goal in the final 3:40 as the Purple Aces finished on a 9-2 run to win the contest, which started at 11 a.m. and drew nearly 3,000 as part of a promotion for local schoolchildren.

    Creighton men edge UMKC, stay unbeaten

    The Creighton men's tennis team topped UMKC 4-3 Thursday, improving to 2-0 in duals. Creighton won all three doubles matches, then split the six singles matches. The Bluejays clinched the match on Kyle Obermeier's 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
