Bill would drop taxes on stadium

Omaha's glistening TD Ameritrade Park looks like a city-owned facility and has often been called that. But if you dig through the fine print, it is actually owned by a nonprofit corporation that leases the property back to the city so it can stage the College World Series and other events. Omaha's new stadium generated a net operating profit of $5.6 million in its first official fiscal year, according to a new financial report, and was more than able to cover the ballpark's contributions to its debt payments. "The stadium is paying its way as we said it was going to," said Roger Dixon, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, which runs TD Ameritrade Park.

Jennifer Kephart, owner of Omaha Pedicab, gains a lot of business from the College World Series. In fact, pedaling passengers around the TD Ameritrade Park grounds and the downtown area is a big chunk of the entrepreneur's summertime activities. “To take that 10 days away from me is a huge problem,” Kephart told the City Council on Tuesday. “It's a serious hit for me and what I do.”
