    Creighton and Dallas Baptist each got something out of the next-to-last weekend series of college baseball’s regular season. In spite of losing two of three games to the Patriots, the Bluejays emerged from the series with a little more belief that they have a chance to make some noise in the Missouri Valley tournament.

    Creighton found itself tantalizing close Sunday to recording a rare and significant series victory. But before the Bluejays could get out of the eighth inning, Dallas Baptist had rallied for four runs that produced an 8-6 victory in front of 1,705 at TD Ameritrade Park.

    Creighton and Xavier treated basketball fans in Cincinnati to a show in the final hours of 2002. With future NBA players headlining each team, the Bluejays and Musketeers staged a shootout to remember. Kyle Korver made eight 3-pointers and scored 32 points to keep Creighton close, but Xavier pulled out a 75-73 victory when David West, a future two-time NBA All-Star, made a basket in the closing seconds.

    Home runs help Dallas Baptist top Jays

    Creighton starter Shane Liska was razor sharp the first three innings of Saturday night's game against one of college baseball's best hitting teams. Dallas Baptist then demonstrated what makes it so dangerous offensively, knocking Liska from the game with a five-run fourth inning that carried the Patriots to a 5-2 victory that snapped the Bluejays' five-game winning streak.

    The roots of turning Gonzaga from a school that hardly ever played in the NCAA tournament to a program that never misses one are grounded in desperation. Mike Roth took over an athletic department 15 years ago that had celebrated exactly one appearance in the NCAA tournament (1995). His new coach, Dan Monson, agreed with his boss that drastic steps needed to be taken.

    A Creighton team that hasn't always played up to its capabilities this season showed Friday night that it just might be getting the hang of things. The Bluejays got masterful pitching from Ty Blach and a monster hit from Scott Thornburg in posting a 4-1 win against Dallas Baptist in front of 3,022 at TD Ameritrade Park.
