Game of the week

>> Football: Riverside (2-2, 1-1) at Underwood (2-2, 1-1), 7 p.m. Friday. Seven of the eight teams in Class A, District 8 have records of .500 or better. The scramble for the four playoff spots will be fierce, making this a key game.


>> Football: Exira-EHK (4-0, 4-0) at Glidden-Ralston (4-0, 3-0): This one will go a long way toward deciding the Eight-Man, District 7 champ. Coon Rapids-Bayard also is 3-0 in district play.

>> Cross country: Cyclone Invitational, 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Harlan. A-H-S-T, Atlantic, CB Abraham Lincoln, CB Lewis Central, CB St. Albert, CB Thomas Jefferson, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood, Griswold, Harlan, Nishnabotna, Red Oak, Riverside, Treynor, Underwood and Woodbine are expected to compete.

>> Volleyball: IKM-Manning at Treynor, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Entering Thursday, Treynor is 4-0 in Western Iowa Conference play while league newcomer IKM-Manning is 3-1.

Burmeister honored

Nodaway Valley coach Darrell Burmeister is the Iowa nominee for the National Federation of State High School Associations’ boys basketball coach of the year. The nomination was made by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and approved by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The recognition honors coaches for achievement in their sport throughout their career. Burmeister has a 475-171 (.735) career record, including 376-63 (.856) at Nodaway Valley.



>> Travis Henningsen, Riverside: In a 21-20 win against Logan-Magnolia, he carried 28 times for 100 yards and a touchdown, adding nine tackles.

>> Eric Koerner, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto: Carried 29 times for 210 yards and two touchdowns as the Rams rallied for a 28-24 win against Missouri Valley.

>> Cody Kingery, Underwood: The junior rushed 16 times for 202 yards and two touchdowns in a 52-14 win over West Monona.

>> Spencer Phillips, Fremont-Mills: Rushed for 256 yards and three TDs on 17 carries, and made nine tackles in a 55-12 Eight-Man win against Essex.

>> Colby Jennings, East Mills: Rushed 19 times for 135 yards and three touchdowns, and made 11 tackles in a 37-6 win against Westwood.

>> Jake Bruggeman, Glidden-Ralston: In a 42-28 Eight-Man win over West Harrison, he rushed for 132 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown, and made 10 tackles.

>> Southwest Valley defense: Limited CAM to 207 total yards in a 59-20 Eight-Man win.

>> Robert Neustrom, Sioux City North: Completed 12 of 16 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, and carried 20 times for 72 yards and two scores in a 32-21 win against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

>> Cash Wilcke, OA-BCIG: In a bounceback 38-17 win over Shenandoah, he completed 4 of 7 passes for 69 yards and a score, carried 25 times for 153 yards and another score, and made six tackles.

>> Zach Evans, Coon Rapids-Bayard: Rushed 29 times for 174 yards, added seven tackles — including two for losses — in a 40-35 Eight-Man win over Woodbine.

>> Gavin Kruse, Glenwood: The senior had a team-high 11 tackles in a 31-14 win against Perry.


>> Madison Walston, Bedford: Had 15 kills and a .357 kill efficiency in a five-set win over East Union.

>> Katelyn Schechinger, IKM-Manning: Slammed 20 kills in a four-set Western Iowa Conference win against Tri-Center.

>> Angie Sorensen, Creston: In a five-set Hawkeye Ten Conference win over Denison-Schleswig, she had 10 kills in 12 attempts with one error for a .750 kill efficiency.

>> Haley Blum, A-H-S-T: Contributed 17 kills with two errors in 29 attempts for a .517 kill efficiency to go with six aces in a five-set Western Iowa Conference win against Riverside.
