Big East leader St. John’s beat Creighton 4-0 Sunday at CU Sports Complex, concluding the Bluejays’ home schedule in league play.
Creighton (21-17, 6-10 Big East) took the opening game of the three-game set, which halted a 15-game winning streak by the Red Storm (23-14, 14-1) and handed them their first conference loss. But St. John’s shut out the Bluejays in the next 12 innings to take the series.
Creighton is tied for sixth in the standings with Providence, one game out of the fourth and final spot to qualify for the Big East tournament in two weeks. The Friars will host CU in the teams’ final conference action, beginning Saturday with a doubleheader followed by a single game Saturday.
It was a pitchers duel early Sunday, with no hits until the third inning and scoreless until the fourth, when St. John’s broke through with two runs to give Tori Free (9-5) all the support she needed.
Free finished with a three-hitter, striking out six and walking two as the Bluejays stranded seven runners.
Erin Burner, the conference’s leading hitter, added a two-run homer in the sixth inning to cap the scoring. The catcher’s 12th blast of the season helped her tie the program’s all-time home run mark.
Sydnee Eck (10-8) took the loss. The sophomore allowed four runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Next up, Creighton will host Drake in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
