Creighton basketball practice report, Nov. 6

World-Herald staff writer Steven Pivovar shares his observations from Wednesday’s Creighton men’s basketball practice at the CenturyLink Center.

SEEN: The Bluejays went through a two-hour practice that concluded with some work on late-game situations.

HEARD: “We’ve added some things and cleaned up some things. We’re getting to the point where were shortening things up so we make sure we’re fresh on Friday.” — Creighton coach Greg McDermott, on the progress the Bluejays have made in practice this week

SEEN: The willingness of freshman center Zach Hanson to get better. After failing to convert a couple of inside chances and hearing about it from the coaches, Hanson showed a power move on his next opportunity and finished with a dunk. His progress throughout preseason practice has put him in position to contribute immediately.

HEARD: “He’s very coachable. All the freshmen are, but Zach really wants to get better. Usually, when you have big guys that are willing to work and want to improve, you see them make strides by leaps and bounds.” — McDermott.

SEEN: The last-second shot drills produced few baskets but one that did was a thing of beauty. With two seconds on the clock, Ethan Wragge threw a long pass to Doug McDermott, who caught it near the top of the key and immediately dished a pass to Isaiah Zierden. His shot dropped through just before the clock hit zero.

HEARD: “Maybe we should have Alex Olsen throwing that pass. He was a quarterback in high school.” — Creighton center Will Artino, after one of Wragge’s long attempts fell short of the mark.

ON TAP: Creighton will practice for less than two hours Thursday as it winds up preparations for Friday’s opening game against Alcorn State.
