Creighton men’s soccer senior Jose Gomez finished as the second runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy presented at the MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet Friday evening in St. Louis.

The award, annually given to the best soccer player in NCAA Division I soccer, was presented to junior forward Patrick Mullins from the University of Maryland. The first runner-up was Notre Dame forward Ryan Finley followed by Gomez.

Gomez’s third-place finish follows former Creighton star Ethan Finlay’s runner-up effort in 2011. Fellow Bluejay greats Keith DeFini, Brian Kamler, Richard Mulrooney, Ross Paule and Mike Tranchilla have also been finalists for the award, while current CU assistant coach Johnny Torres won the award in 1997.

Torres represented the Creighton coaching staff in support of Gomez this weekend. The former All-America selection returned to the MAC after claiming the award following his senior season in Omaha in 1997.
