Scouting South Dakota: The Coyotes snapped a four-game skid with Sunday’s 74-61 win over Boise State in their home opener. South Dakota played its first five games on the road, winning at Cal State Fullerton before dropping games at UC Irvine, Iowa State, North Dakota and Drake. The loss to the Bulldogs came on a neutral court in overtime, and the Coyotes’ dropped four-point decisions to Irvine and North Dakota. Junior college transfer Raeshel Contreras is the team’s second-leading scorer as she comes off the bench to average 12.8 points per game. Seekamp leads the team with a 16.5 scoring average. The Coyotes aren’t shy about shooting from the perimeter as they average almost 18 3-point attempts per game. They’ve also been prone to sloppiness with the basketball, averaging almost 20 turnovers per game.

Scouting Creighton: The Bluejay post players will need to focus on keeping the Coyotes off the boards as South Dakota has been averaging almost 42 rebounds per game. The Coyotes also have scored 62 points in the paint in their last two games, making defensive awareness a high priority for starters Sarah Nelson and Alyssa Kamphaus and backups Brianna Rollerson and Alexis Akin-Otiko. Rollerson, a redshirt freshman from Omaha Central, is coming off her best game as she posted career highs with 10 points and seven rebounds in Saturday’s win over Houston. The Bluejays need McKenzie Fujan to contribute as she did against Houston as she scored a season-high 16 points. Fujan’s ability to get to the rim as well as knock down shots from the perimeter complements the scoring ability of Nelson and Marissa Janning, who has scored 10 points or more in four of the Bluejays’ five games.

Opening tips: Creighton has won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams and holds an 11-8 edge in the series. South Dakota did come to Omaha two seasons ago and leave with a 56-53 overtime win. … The Coyotes were picked to finish third in the Summit League’s preseason poll. … Amy Williams, a 1998 Nebraska graduate, is 21-20 in her second season as South Dakota’s coach.
