Alabama, Mississippi next to get military memorial walls

The Omaha-based veterans memorial group Remembering Our Fallen will unveil two more state memory walls this weekend in Alabama and Mississippi.

The walls feature both personal and military portraits of the service members from each state who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bill and Evonne Williams, whose four sons are current or former service members, came up with the idea four years ago when they created a display of fallen Nebraska veterans.

The Alabama display will be unveiled Saturday in Tuscaloosa.

The Mississippi display is set for unveiling Sunday at the War Memorial Building in Jackson.

The Nebraska wall is on display this week at Cabela's Club, 4800 NW 1st St. in Lincoln. It will be open to the public from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Steve Liewer

Connecting Riverfront Trail with county line in the works

The City of Omaha is planning to connect its Riverfront Trail from downtown Omaha north to the Douglas County line.

The plan is to put in two new sections of concrete trail in Omaha and Carter Lake.

One would connect existing sections of the Riverfront Trail on the west side of Abbott Drive from Miller's Landing to Kiwanis Park.

The other would be in Levi Carter Park along the north and west shores of Carter Lake. That would connect the Riverfront Trail to the Locust Avenue Trail.

The city parks department will hold a public hearing May 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the pavilion in Miller Park. — Roseann Moring
