Council Bluffs runners savor taste of state

FORT DODGE, Iowa — The first taste of the Class 4-A state cross country stage was a pleasant experience for a quartet of Council Bluffs runners.

Lewis Central's Kye Madsen placed 66th overall with a time of 19 minutes, 59 seconds as the lone Council Bluffs representative in the girls race, and in boys competition, Thomas Jefferson's McGwire Midkiff (42nd, 16:37) and Jon Dahlheimer (45th, 16:41) and Lewis Central's Brenden O'Brien (88th, 17:07) enjoyed a solid day at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.

Madsen accomplished her primary goal of finishing her prep career at state. She was happy to be able to run against the best in Iowa.

"It was a wonderful experience. I really couldn't ask for more. I'm thankful to be here. I had so much momentum from the crowd and everything. It was really fun."

Midkiff, who slipped into the state field with a 15th-place finish at last week's state-qualifying meet, ran one of his best races of the season to finish as the top Council Bluffs boys competitor.

"I'm pretty happy with the finish," he said. "I felt really good. I felt like I pushed myself harder than I pushed myself all season."
