Fossum, Mildred Hovrud

Mildred Hovrud Fossum, cherished family matriarch, died at the age of 95 in Canton, SD. Mildred was born at the farm home of her parents, Engebret and Clara (Hilmen) Hovrud, southwest of Worthing, SD. This farm was the original 1870's homestead of her grandparents, Knudt and Raginild Hilman. She was born into a family of 10 children. She was baptized August 15, 1920 and confirmed July 14, 1935 at West Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Worthing, SD, by Rev. H. M. Solem. She attended Nelson School District #34 in rural Lincoln County, SD. On June 29, 1940, Mildred was united in marriage to Ernest Fossum at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Parsonage, In wood, IA by Reverend B. Habel. They farmed their entire married life in Lincoln County, SD. Her husband passed away on December 5, 1987. Mildred was a long-time active member of Canton Lutheran Church where she also was active in the Marian Circle and Bible Study. Those grateful for having shared her life are 2 sons, Charles and his wife Lorene, and Arlyn and his wife Joann, Canton; 9 grandchildren, including her eldest grandchild, Todd Fossum and his husband, Dr. Joseph Hoagbin, Omaha; 19 great grandchildren; sisters, Emma Rodvold, Vida Hitterdal, both of Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Nila Olson, Centerville, Clarice (Fred) Haan, Chancellor, Ida Fossum, Lennox, Erma Fossum, Canton; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Mary Hill; 2 brothers, Clarence and LeRoy; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters in infancy. FUNERAL SERVICE 1:30 pm Tuesday, February 16, Canton Lutheran Church, Canton, SD. VISITATION Monday, February 15, 2-8 pm, Anderson Funeral home, Canton, with family present from 6-8 pm.
