GRASSLANDS COUNTDOWN

A male calf is born to one of the five Swaziland elephants at the Dallas Zoo.

3 The Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium opens its $73 million, 28-acre African Grasslands on Friday. We're counting down the days with facts about the exhibit.

Three species: Three types of animals are making their debut at the zoo as part of the African Grasslands. Impalas — high-jumping, dainty African antelopes — will go on display in mixed-species yards with giraffes, rhinos and ostriches. A group of male impalas with twisting horns will join elephants and zebras in another mixed-species yard, where they'll also mingle with another new species, helmeted guinea fowl. In the nearby lagoon, pink-backed pelicans are new as well.
