Hawkeyes fall to Dayton

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Charles Cooke scored 22 points to lead Dayton past Iowa 82-77 in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational on Thursday.

Cooke connected on two free throws to give Dayton a 78-77 lead with 50 seconds left. Scoochie Smith's layup extended the lead to 80-77 with 11 seconds to go.

Cooke secured the win by hitting two more free throw with 4 seconds remaining. He played the final few minutes of the game with four fouls.

Dayton (4-0) also got 16 points from both Kendall Pollard and Kyle Davis.

Jarrod Uthoff had 18 points for Iowa (3-1)

Iowa used a 16-2 run to take a 75-71 lead with 3 minutes to play. Mike Gesell's long-range jumper ended the surge.

Boston College 68:

Denzel Valentine had a triple-double of 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for No. 3 Michigan State in an opening-round game at the DirectTV Wooden Legacy to give coach Tom Izzo his 500th career victory.

No. 8 Villanova 59, Stanford 45: Jalen Brunson scored 18 points and Villanova overcame a poor shooting performance against Stanford in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tipoff. Brunson had the most productive game of his freshman season while the Wildcats (5-0) shot just 30.6 percent form the field but advanced to the championship.

No. 25 Texas A&M 62,

No. 10 Gonzaga 61:

Danuel House scored 19 points as Texas A&M advanced to the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Silas Melson missed a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer for the Bulldogs, with House contesting the shot.

Monmouth 70,

No. 17 Notre Dame 68:

Justin Robinson scored 22 points, including two free throws with 3.6 seconds left, and Monmouth upset Notre Dame in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational. Robinson was fouled driving to the basket and calmly sank the decisive shots.

Syracuse 79,

No. 18 UConn 76: Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney each had 17 points, and Syracuse beat Connecticut to reach the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Orange (5-0) went on an 18-8 spurt to take a 65-55 lead with 7:45 remaining.

Southern Cal 72,

No. 20 Wichita State 69: Freshman Bennie Boatright had a career-high 22 points for USC in the AdvoCare Invitational. Wichita State (2-2) played without senior guard Fred VanVleet, who missed his second consecutive game with ankle and hamstring injuries.

No. 23 Xavier 64, Alabama 45:

Trevon Bluiett scored 15 points, J.P. Macura added 14 as Xavier rolled in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational. Macura helped the Musketeers (5-0) overcome an early first-half deficit.

BIG EAST

Providence 74, Evansville 64: Ben Bentil scored a career-high 24 points, Kris Dunn added 18 and Providence made it out of the opening round of the Wooden Legacy. Four players scored in double figures for the Friars (5-0), including Junior Lomomba with 13. Evansville (3-1) was led by D.J. Balentine with 18 points, and Egidiju Mockevicius with 13 points and nine rebounds.

BIG TEN

Michigan 102, Charlotte 47:

Moritz Wagner had 19 points and Michigan routed Charlotte in the consolation round of Battle 4 Atlantis. Caris LeVert added 13 points as four Wolverine players reached double figures.

WOMEN

No. 5 Iowa 83,

Wright State 77:

Chase Coley scored a career-high 22 points for Iowa at the Lone Star Showcase. Coley was 11 of 16 from the floor and Alexa Kastanek, a graduate of Lincoln Southeast, was 6 of 9 from 3-point range for all 18 of her points.
