Oman accepts 10 detainees from Guantanamo prison

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Oman said Monday that it had accepted 10 detainees from the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay ahead of President Barack Obama's leaving office, part of his efforts to shrink the facility he promised to close. Oman's Foreign Ministry said it had accepted the prisoners at Obama's request. It did not name the prisoners. The U.S. Defense Department did not immediately respond to questions about the transfer. There were 242 Gitmo prisoners when Obama took office in 2009. Recently U.S. authorities said 19 of the remaining 55 prisoners at the base in Cuba were cleared for release.— AP

Colombia arrests assassinated 1990 candidate's bodyguard

BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombian police have arrested the former bodyguard of a presidential candidate who was assassinated on a crowded airliner more than two decades ago. Former rebel leader Carlos Pizarro was killed in 1990 when an assailant opened fire on him midflight. His state-assigned bodyguard at the time was hailed as a hero for avoiding a bigger bloodbath by killing the candidate's assailant. But the Chief Prosecutor's Office arrested Jaime Gomez on Monday, saying he was in on the plot and killed Pizarro's attacker to ensure his silence.— AP

Three bombers at Nigerian university kill professor

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Three suicide bombers, including a child, exploded at dawn Monday at Nigeria's northeastern University of Maiduguri, killing a university professor and another child, witnesses and police said. The bombers also died. One blast ripped through the mosque where professors were saying dawn prayers, police and rescue officials said.— AP
