Yia Yia's Pizza's new location is already a neighborhood favorite

Over the years, I’ve been to plenty of bars in the Omaha metro area and Lincoln. I liked a lot of them, but there are very few I’ve truly loved and even fewer that I’ve visited again and again.

Yia Yia’s Pizza and Beer is one of those.

The Lincoln staple’s new Van Dorn location opened in May, and I’ve already lost track of how many times I’ve been there.

Though the Van Dorn location in east Lincoln is new, Yia Yia’s first location has been a favorite spot in downtown Lincoln since 1993.

I visited the old location several times and liked it, but there’s something about the new spot that I like even more. It’s smaller, and since it’s nestled in a more residential area, it has a neighborhood vibe you’re not going to get at the other location.

While the original location is a hub for people working downtown during the day and college students at night, the pizza place’s new location is a hot spot for a more family-oriented crowd. Each time I’ve visited the Van Dorn location, I’ve seen large families and young parents with babies strapped to their chests. This makes sense, because the new spot is a convenient place to bring the whole family.

Unlike the downtown site, where you’ll need to find parking at a meter or in a garage, the Van Dorn location offers plenty of parking nearby.

Then there’s the pizza, which offers something for the whole family. Yia Yia’s is known for its eclectic pizza offerings. It has more than 15 specialty pizzas, all of which are customizable and available as a slice or as a 12-inch medium, 16-inch large or 20-inch extra-large pizza.

At our last visit, my friends and I tried The Local, The American and The Atlantic. The Local is similar to a supreme and has bacon, hamburger, pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, bell pepper, black olive, mozzarella and marinara. The American comes with chicken, corn, jalapeño, Monterey Jack cheese and barbecue sauce. The Atlantic has grilled chicken, bacon, potato, broccoli, mozzarella and a white sauce.

They were all fantastic.

But if none of these pizzas strikes your fancy, there are plenty of other options. Yia Yia’s lets you customize your pies from a list of about 50 ingredients, including surprising toppings like sauerkraut, zucchini and cranberries. It also offers gluten-free cauliflower-crust pizzas, salads, loaded potatoes, loaded breads, soup, kids’ meals and desserts.

Just as its name implies, Yia Yia’s Pizza and Beer offers plenty of beer, too. The beer list has roughly two dozen craft beers, including several from local brewing companies such as Zipline Brewing Company and Brickway Brewery & Distillery.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that the Van Dorn location is a place you’ll want to visit again and again. And again.

In fact, I may go there right now. Maybe I’ll see you there.
