Scouting Nebraska: Coach Darin Erstad expects to mix and match often early on this season. Heated position battles left NU with lots of options. Erstad says the Huskers are as deep as they’ve been during his tenure. ... He’s considering four starting pitchers for Sunday’s series finale. He didn’t name anyone. The decision will be based on who’s needed Friday and Saturday. ... Junior pitcher Derek Burkamper would have likely been the No. 3 guy, but he has been suspended for the first two weekends of the season for violating team rules. ... Junior center fielder Ryan Boldt has been named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list. He’s the preseason Big Ten player of the year, according to Perfect Game and Baseball America.

Scouting College of Charleston: The Cougars promoted Matt Heath to head coach after Monte Lee was hired by Clemson. Heath was College of Charleston’s pitching coach. ... The Cougars made their second straight NCAA tournament last year. They lost to Florida State in the regional title game. ... College of Charleston was picked by coaches to finish second behind UNC-Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association. ... Bailey Ober missed the 2015 season because of Tommy John surgery. The 6-foot-8 right-hander was the NCBWA national freshman pitcher of the year in 2014. ... Hitters to watch: sophomore outfielder Ryan Brown had a .413 on-base percentage last year, finished second on the team with 63 runs and stole 15 bases; catcher Erven Roper started all but one game and hit .288; first baseman Bradley Jones blasted 11 home runs and drove in 45 runs.

Dugout chatter: Nebraska has never played College of Charleston. ... The Huskers haven’t finished the season’s first weekend with a winning record since 2011. They have won two straight openers, though. ... Nebraska will have a new first base coach this year. Brad Smith takes over for Jeff Christy, who took an assistant coaching job at Central Oklahoma this offseason. ... The Huskers went 9-12 in true road games last year. College of Charleston was 26-8 at home in 2015.
