Why an 11-year-old in North Platte is donating all her hair

Mattie Morrell is not letting the last days of summer vacation merely drift by.

The 11-year-old daughter of Mike and Marcie Morrell plans to donate her hair to Wigs for Kids and is working hard to raise money to help defray the cost of making the wig.

“It was all her idea,” said Mattie’s mother, Marcie. “I think it started with a friend of ours who had cancer and ended up losing all her hair and getting a wig.”

Mattie first thought about donating her hair to Locks of Love.

“We looked it up together and realized that Locks of Love charges the patients for the wigs and Mattie didn’t like that idea,” Marcie said. “So we did some more research and found Wigs for Kids.”

Wigs for Kids was founded in 1981 by Jeffrey Paul. The organization provides custom-made hair replacements for young people. Each hair replacement costs about $1,800 to make.

“Mattie was so excited when she learned about Wigs for Kids,” Marcie said. “She has gone door-to-door in our neighborhood.”

On Tuesday, Mattie was at her lemonade stand at the corner of F and Jeffers Streets in front of David Cain’s American Family Insurance Agency, where Marcie works. She was selling lemonade, bracelets and treats.

Among her customers were Adams Middle School principal Jeff Steinbeck and assistant principal Vikki Carlson. Mattie will be a sixth-grade student at Adams this year.

“We heard there was something good going on here and wanted to stop by,” Carlson said.

Other customers included Paula Bagnell, who herself is battling cancer.

“This is so terrific, what she is doing,” Bagnell said. “I was driving by and saw her sign and just had to stop.”

On Aug. 14, Mattie will have her long hair cut to donate to Wigs for Kids.

“It takes about 12 hair donations to make one wig,” Mattie said.

The Morrell’s are active members of the Berean Church in North Platte. Mike is a member of the North Platte Board of Education.

Mattie plans to be at her stand to sell lemonade, bracelets and treats again from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
