Famous Budweiser Clydesdales to prance into Fremont

The Budweiser Clydesdales will make at leaSt four appearances in Fremont, beginning Wednesday.

Some stars of the Internet and the Super Bowl — the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales — will make appearances in Fremont starting Wednesday.

The full eight-horse hitch will appear at the Main Street Fremont Parade on Saturday at 1 p.m. One-horse appearances are planned at the Walmart, 3010 E. 23rd St., on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at 1682 E. 23rd St. on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, the team will be staged at Military and Clarmar Avenues in Fremont to make a delivery of a case of beer to the winner of a sweepstakes at noon.

The appearances will be courtesy of Anheuser-Busch wholesaler Eagle Distributing, which was one of seven distributorships in the country to win a company excellence award three years in a row.

“We want the public to be able to see them as much as possible,” company president Bruce Nelsen said.

Eagle Distributing delivers to the majority of northeastern Nebraska, with locations in Fremont and Norfolk. The distributorship employs 65 people and delivers 1.1 million cases annually from each operation.

“It's huge,” Nelsen said of the Clydesdales' appearance. “For us to be able to do this, it's a dream come true ... for all of us.”

The Clydesdales have been part of the company's marketing since 1933, when August A. Busch Sr.'s sons surprised him with six of the horses to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition.

Today, Anheuser-Busch owns about 250 Clydesdales. The horses are bred at Warm Springs Ranch in Cooper County, Mo., and those with the trademark features join teams that make hundreds of appearances each year. Requirements to qualify are extensive: each Budweiser Clydesdale must be a gelding at least 4 years old, stand 72 inches at the shoulder when fully mature, weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds, have a bay coat, four white legs, a white blaze and a black mane and tail.
