South Sioux City looms as the overall No. 1 seed in the Class A district pairings released Tuesday by the Nebraska School Activities Association.

The Cardinals climbed to the top of the overall Nebraska Top 10 ratings this week after a pair of losses suffered by previous No. 1 Fremont. South Sioux is 19-1, with its only loss coming at a national tournament in Florida over the Christmas holiday.

The A-1 district that features the Cardinals is the only one with five teams, so it will begin Monday. The other six districts have four teams and will begin next Tuesday night.

Defending Class A champion Omaha Westside will compete in the A-7 district that also consists of Lincoln East, Omaha Central and Bellevue East.

The seven Class A district champions and one wild-card team advance to the state tournament that begins March 3 in Lincoln.

Class A district play will follow the same format as last season, with all games taking place at home sites. The highest-seeded remaining team in each district will host the district final Feb. 25, with game times to be determined.

The Class B district pairings also were released Tuesday by the NSAA. Unlike Class A, there will be one host site for each of the six districts.

Class B host sites are Bellevue East (B-1), Papillion-La Vista (B-2), Omaha Bryan (B-3), Lincoln High (B-4), Grand Island High (B-5) and Prairie View School in Ogallala (B-6).

Platteview, the lone remaining undefeated team in the state, will compete in the B-1 district. Other teams in that district are Waverly, Norris, Plattsmouth and Nebraska City.

The six Class B district champions and two wild-card teams will move on to state. There will be a new champion because defending champ Lincoln Pius X moved up from B to A this season.
