UTICA – The first eight minutes of Tuesday nights D2-2 second game at Centennial High School set the stage for the Hampton Hawks 54-41 win over the Meridian Mustangs.
Leading 3-2, Tayma Sebek scored on a short jumper followed by an old fashioned 3-point play from junior guard Tristin Mason.
With Hampton on top 8-2, the No. 8 team in D2 closed out the quarter on an 11-7 run, sparked by 10 of Mason’s team high 15 points.
Also in the Hawks scoring run, Jaime Troester knocked down two baseline 3-pointers that pushed the lead at the time to 18-6.
Hampton (19-4) continued to build their lead in the second quarter as Troester connected on her third trey and Mason put up a short jumper off an offensive rebound to open the lead to 25-13.
Hampton’s Tayler Klassen hit a short jumper off the glass and Kiersten Dose connected on the Hawk’s fifth 3-pointer of the game to make it 32-15 at the half.
Meridian closed to within 12 points at one time in the third quarter as Erin Johnson did all she could to keep the Mustangs in the game scoring 16 of her game high 18 points in the second half.
Meridian could not mount any real comeback as they could not find the range behind the arc, missing all 11 attempts in the game.
Hampton was 22-of-53 from the field, just 5-of-17 on 3-pointers, all in the first half, and 5-of-11 at the charity stripe.
Klassen also finished with nine points and Madison VanHousen added eight.
Meridian was 17-of-51 overall and that included their 0-of-11 from the arc.
The Mustangs hit 7-of-14 free throws.
Meridian got 16 points from Allison Klipp as her and Johnson combined for 34 of the teams 41 points.
Hampton held a 37-32 rebounding advantage and the Hawks were charted with 10 turnovers to 13 for the Mustangs.
Hampton (19-4) and Exeter-Milligan (17-4) will meet for the subdistrict final on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
