COUNCIL BLUFFS — Council Bluffs Lewis Central won all the events. C.B. Abraham Lincoln won the meet.

Less than two weeks before district action, both swimming teams got the results they wanted to see.

Eight Titans claimed at least a share of an individual city event title, but A.L.'s roster depth proved to be the deciding factor in a 227-197 overall triumph at the annual all-Council Bluffs meet Tuesday night at Lewis Central Middle School.

“I knew it was coming and the boys knew it was coming,” Lewis Central coach Bruce Schomburg said. “They won the events. They didn't lose the meet – they got outscored.”

RJ Hemmingsen broke two city meet records, gliding to victories in the 100-yard butterfly (51.66 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (53.90). The junior was also part of the top 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay units.

Hemmingsen now owns at least a share of five city meet-best times.

Spencer Smith, a junior, joined his teammate on the same relay squads while also churning out firsts in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. Freshman Ryan Price broke a 20-year-old city meet mark when he wrapped up the 200 free in 1:50.87 and also prevailed in the 100 free and 200 free relay.

Senior Brandon Farnum earned top honors in the 200 individual medley, 500 free and 200 free relay. Other L.C. champs as members of relay teams were Caleb Shudak, Noah Parks, Chase Sowers and Taylor Severson.

The Lynx, meanwhile, were beneficiaries of a scoring system that awards points out to eight places. With Lewis Central operating at nine swimmers, A.L. won the city meet for a third consecutive time.

“We knew going in that Lewis Central's swimmers are more talented and more experienced,” Abraham Lincoln coach Adam Moon said. “We weren't concerned about whether we would win races; we were more concerned about getting the kids opportunities to swim and improve times.

The Lynx did just that while drawing from a pool of more than three dozen swimmers. Senior Patrick Jones was a highlight, shaving off nearly 10 seconds from his runner-up 500 free time (6:30.66) and 6 seconds from his third-place 200 free mark (2:12.46).

A.L. heads to Sioux City for the Missouri River Conference meet Thursday before going to Johnston for districts on Feb. 2. Seven seniors swam for the last time in Council Bluffs.

“We set out to break some personal bests and that's what they did today,” Moon said. “They came together as a team and scored a lot of points. It was a good meet for us.”

Lewis Central concludes a busy month as it prepares to travel to Southeast Polk for its district next weekend. Farnum is the lone senior for a group likely to threaten more city marks next winter.

“I knew coming in that mathematically this wasn't going to work out,” Schomburg said. “My kids swam proudly and swam their events.”
