Hampton manhandles High Plains in girls' hoops

Senior Morgan Van Housen of High Plains faces the flying 'D' of Hampton Hawk senior Teya Mason in prep basketball action Thursday on the Hawks' home floor. Hampton cruised to a 70-33 victory.


HAMPTON - The Hawk girls had too many shooters, rebounders and high-pressure defenders for High Plains Thursday night in Hampton where the host team cruised to a 70-33 victory.

Hampton scored the first seven points of the game in a run that included a three from Teya Mason and led 19-6 at the first-period horn.

Morgan Van Housen planted a layup in the net off the break for High Plains to open scoring 20 seconds into the second quarter, but with 4:30 until halftime the Storm girls were in big trouble down 24-9. By halftime it was a 30-point game at 41-11 Hawks.

Kalynn Dahlke and Teya Mason paced the Hawks with 22 and 21 points, respectively. Brittany Dose added a dozen and Hannah Bamesberger chipped in 11. For High Plains it was Van Housen with 10 and nine from Shelbi Dittmer.

The Storm hit 12 field goals, all 2-pointers, and went 9-14 at the charity stripe. Hampton's artillery netted 23 twos, five 3-pointers and 9-15 free throws.

The Hawks got seven rebounds from Cami Roehrs, six from Mason and four from Dahlke. Dahlke, Mason and Dose pilfered nine, seven and six steals. Roehrs topped Hampton's assist chart with six.

Hampton improved its record to 7-3 in D2. For High Plains it's now a mark of 0-9 in D1.

The Hawks host Palmer on Saturday. The Storm visits the Tigers in Palmer next Tuesday.
