Medicine Valley Invite

Chandler Tyan of Sutherland looks up as he pins Thomas Foster of Medicine Valley in the 126-pound final at the Medicine Valley Invite on Friday in Curtis. Tyan wears one pink and one purple shoe in honor of teammate Greg McKain.

CURTIS — Late January means getting ready for the postseason for many wrestlers.

Several local wrestlers were doing just that at the Medicine Valley Invite Wrestling Tournament on Friday in Curtis.

Loomis-Bertrand won the tournament with 125 points, followed by Southern Valley with 119, Sedgwick County-Fleming, Colo., with 113.5 and the host Raiders with 99.

Stapleton-McPherson County was fifth with 96.5, followed by Dundy County-Stratton with 90, Eustis-Farnam with 78, Perkins County with 74, Soup Loup with 69, Sutherland with 68, Mullen with 62, Elwood with 45, Sandhills-Thedford with 36, Garden County with 28, Chase County with 27, North Platte JV with 24.5, Hyannis with 11, Hitchcock County with 8 and Wauneta-Palisade scored 0.

Many of Sutherland’s team points came from the lower weight classes — 120 and 126 pounds to be exact. Sailors senior Chandler Tyan improved to 23-1 on the season by winning the 126-pound crown, while Collin Fleecs dropped just his second match since the Christmas break in the 120-pound championship.

Tyan defeated Thomas Foster of Medicine Valley by second period pin to win the 126-pound crown, while Fleecs lost 7-2 to Teak Edwards of Loomis-Bertrand.

Tyan is easy to spot on the wrestling match. He sports one purple shoe and one pink shoe while wrestling.

“Greg McKain is a good friend of mine,” Tyan said. “He bought the purple ones and I bought the pink ones and we traded one shoe.

“The idea was we had to be tough to wear these shoes on the mat.”

McKain was lost for the season with a knee injury, but Tyan has kept on wearing the shoes.

“Part of it is the pact Greg and I made,” Tyan said. “One of our coaches said if I started losing, he was taking away the shows because any guy wearing these shoes should be kicking butt, not getting his butt kicked.”

The coach was Sutherland assistant coach Anthony Chancellor.

“So, I’m still wearing them,” Tyan said.

Tyan trains every day at practice with Fleecs. The senior said his junior teammate is very tough.

“He tests me every day in practice because he won’t go to his back,” Tyan said. “He’s the toughest kid I’ve ever wrestled about going to his back, so he’s made me a better wrestler by making me work for pins in practice.”

Fleecs, who fell to 19-8 on the season with the loss, admits he has work to do.

“I’ve been wrestling really well since the Christmas break,” he said. “I’m 9-2 now since the break, so it’s coming.

“I like neutral and down, but I need to get better on top.”

Fleecs admits to having “stepped up” for his team after McKain went down.

“Chadler’s our only wrestling senior with McKain out,” Fleecs said. “So, yeah, I’ve stepped into more of a leader role.”

Sutherland coach Ryan Mraz said Fleecs is a leader, but he’s not a vocal one.

“Collin leads by example,” the coach said. “He’s the first one done with conditioning drills, but you won’t hear him.”

South Loup’s Garrett Dockweiler scored the win in the 160-pound weight class, getting an 11-2 decision over Gideon Monette of Mullen in the final.

Dockweiler improved to 19-5 on the season, with four of his losses this season coming against Class D’s top-ranked wrestler, Jake Wells of Anselmo-Merna.

“It’s just good to have him back and healthy,” said South Loup head coach Matt Coleman. “The last two years he’s gotten hurt and missed the end of the season.

“He’s a hard-nosed kid who goes all out on the mat. Yeah, he’s faced Wells a lot, but Wells has the target on his back and Garrett is working hard.”

Two wrestlers maintained their unbeaten status on the season. Perkins County’s Vinny Ross improved to 28-0 on the season with a first-period pin of Jonathon Johnson of Dundy County-Startton at 285 pounds. Ross was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Medicine Valley’s Rulon Taylor, ranked No. 1 in Class D at 220 pounds, improved to 30-0 with a second-period pin over Levi Peterson of Stapleton-McPherson County. Peterson dropped to 19-6 on the season.

Austin Thelander of Perkins County earned a 9-2 decision over Jacob Calvert of Dundy County-Stratton to win the 106-pound crown, while Eustis-Farnam’s Chris Werth won 7-5 in overtime to defeat Sam Hunt of Southern Valley at 113 pounds. Both Thelander and Werth have just one loss on the season.

The final area champion was Clay Seifer of Stapleton-McPherson County, who claimed the 195-pound crown with a third-period pin of Trevor Jensen of Dundy County-Stratton. Seifer improved to 22-5 on the season.
