SIDNEY — Sidney's running game was too much for Northwest in the season opener for both teams.
Sidney's Logan Lewis and Chance Anglin powered the Red Raiders to a 44-22 victory Friday over the Vikings.
Lewis finished the night with 258 yards on 28 carries (unofficially) and three touchdowns on runs of 20, 94 and 1 yards while Anglin had 235 yards on 24 carries (unofficially) and three touchdowns on runs of 12, 9 and 55 yards.
Northwest sophomore quarterback Christian Ellsworth was 14-for-24 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns.
Sidney jumped out early with the first 22 points of the game. Lewis opened the scoring with a 20-yard TD run, then with 7:40 left in the first quarter, Lewis broke loose on a 94-yard run to make it 14-0.
Anglin added a 12-yard TD run to make it 22-0 heading into the second quarter.
But that quarter belonged to the Vikings.
Northwest got on the board early in the second quarter on a 4-yard run by Justin Gill to pull the Vikings to within 22-6 with 9:54 left in the half.
The Vikings struck again later in the first half when Ellsworth connected with Taylor Willis on a 23-yard TD pass. A two-point conversion run pulled Northwest to within 22-14 with 4:40 left in the half.
But the Vikings could get no closer. Anglin added a 9-yard run for another Sidney touchdown. Ellsworth then hit Ryan Hipke from 35 yards out to make it 30-22 with 1:51 left in the third.
But Anglin scored again on a 55-yard run to make it 38-22 headed into the fourth quarter. Lewis added a 1-yard run with 5:43 left in the game.
