The assistant principal of Glenwood Community High School has assumed Principal Kerry Newman’s duties while she is on paid administrative leave, the district’s superintendent said Wednesday.

Assistant Principal Rick Nickerson will stay in that role until the matter with Newman is resolved, said Glenwood Community Schools Superintendant Devin Embray. Embray would not say why Newman has been placed on leave.

Newman, an Omaha native, has told The World-Herald she’s confident she will be back at work soon. She said such leaves are necessary if an issue comes up that needs to be investigated.

The Glenwood district hired Newman in 2001. She served as curriculum director and middle school principal before becoming the high school principal in 2007, Embray said. There are about 640 students in the high school. —Andrew J. Nelson
