Open house: The Bellevue Public Schools transportation department will have an open house from 10 a.m. to noon today at the district's transportation center, 2824 Arboretum Drive in Bellevue. The open house is for families with children in the district. The open house will include tours of the operations and maintenance areas.

High schools

A-H-S-T Community Schools: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 14 open house.

Council Bluffs Community School District: 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 back to school night for ninth-graders and any students new to Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson High Schools.

Eagle Elementary in Waverly District 145: The Parents and Teachers of Eagle (PTE) host a back to school bash from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Families can buy school supplies in one location, enjoy a meal together and find out classroom assignments. Open house will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 14.

Meet the special area teachers and visit with the building administrator before being escorted to the child's classroom. The PTO at each school will provide certificates for a free family meal at the Optimists Cookout, which occurs during the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. open house at all four elementary schools. The Gretna Optimist Club will sell hamburger and hot dog meals during each school's open house.

Holy Name School: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 20 back-to-school open house.

Louisville Public Schools: 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 14 back to school picnic at the school playground. In case of rain, picnic will move to the school gym. Hotdogs, drinks and chips will be provided.

Mary Our Queen School: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 back to school open house in the Kenny Center.

Millard Public Schools: Thursday, Safe Walk to School Night and open house at each elementary school. 11 a.m. Friday Cather kindergarten picnic.

High schools

Plattsmouth Activities Complex for Kids: The Plattsmouth Activities Complex for Kids (PACK) project includes installing synthetic turf on the marching band-soccer-football field and construction of a baseball and softball field with a synthetic turf infield. A community walking trail also will be installed around the perimeter of the high school campus. The district plans to install a new polyurethane surface on the high school track, D-zones and runways. The complex is a collaborative effort of the Plattsmouth Community School District, Plattsmouth High School Booster Club, and POPS (Providing Opportunities for Plattsmouth Schools) Foundation.

Concert set: High school students enrolled in Briar Cliff University's 27th annual Pre-All Choral Music Camp will perform a free public concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Grandview Park Band Shell in Sioux City, Iowa. The concert, which will end the choral music camp, will feature more than 270 choral singers. They are from these Iowa high schools: Carroll Kuemper, Central Lyon, Charter Oak-Ute Community, Corning Community, Le Mars Gehlen, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, Hull-Western Christian, Kingsley-Pierson High School, Lawton-Bronson, Council Bluffs Lewis Central, Maple Valley-Anthon Otto, Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn, Panorama, Ridge View Community, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Sheldon Community, Sibley-Ocheydan Community, Sioux Center Community, Sioux City East, Sioux City Bishop Heelan Catholic, Sioux City North, Sioux City West, Spencer Community, Unity Christian and West Monona Community, among others.

Steak time: Come to Omaha Duchesne as the Men for Duchesne host their first steak fry. It will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 10 in the Quinn Performing Arts Center lobby. The cost is $40 a person or $75 a couple. If you plan to attend, RSVP by Monday to Katie Risch Bakhit at kbakhit@duchesneacademy.org.

Elementary schools

Bible lessons: St. Cecilia Cathedral School offered Kingdom Rock as its summer Bible school program. The children learned tools to help them stand strong. Highlights featured biblical character visits from King David and Queen Esther. The children were mentored by family groups led by older youths from St. Cecilia Cathedral School, Omaha Duchesne and Omaha Mercy. The groups made family crests, friendship bracelets, prayer books, T-shirts and Bible bookmarks.

Donating: Students of the Papillion-La Vista School District summer school program, Summer Success, brought loose change to donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Representatives from Pinnacle Bank talked with the students about saving and donating to a good cause. The bank also provided each child with a small savings jar. The students used the jars to collect their change. Summer Success students recently presented their collection of nearly $300 to Big Brothers Big Sisters at La Vista West Elementary.
