GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A child sexual assault case is being moved from Grand Island to Lincoln.
The trial for Abraham D. Richardson, 27, of Grand Island is set to begin April 29.
His court-appointed attorney, Hall County Public Defender Gerry Piccolo, filed a motion for a change of venue in December. Piccolo said pretrial publicity would make it difficult to select a jury in Hall County.
Richardson is charged with first-degree sexual assault on a child under age 12, kidnapping and first-degree assault.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, a 4-year-old girl was found crying outside an apartment on the night of Oct. 2, 2011. A witness told officers she saw a man run away after the sexual assault was interrupted.
Police also received anonymous phone calls suggesting Richardson be investigated for the assault.
If convicted, he faces 20 years to life in prison for the sexual assault, life in prison for kidnapping and one to 50 years in prison for the first-degree assault.
He has been in custody since Oct. 20, 2011, when he was arrested in a separate federal child pornography case. In that case, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August 2012 for receiving and distributing child pornography.
Richardson is being held in the Adams County Jail, mostly for security reasons, said Fred Ruiz, Hall County corrections director.
