Bail was set Friday at $500,000 for a 22-year-old Ralston woman charged with felony child abuse after her 2-month-old son was found to have suffered a broken leg.

Brittany Burgess would have to pay 10 percent, or $50,000, to be released from the Douglas County Jail.

According to an affidavit filed in Douglas County Court, doctors at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center found during a Dec. 21 examination that the child’s left leg had been broken and then broken again. Doctors told police that the fracture was caused by “pushing down and twisting” with considerable force.

Burgess told a police officer that the fracture could have occurred “while she was partially awake” and changing the baby’s diaper. The child was born Oct. 21.
