Feds charge Iowa woman with trying to hire someone to kill her father

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Federal charges have been filed against a Dubuque woman, 23, accused of trying to hire someone to kill her father.

The indictment filed Wednesday says Megan Schmidt used the Internet, emails and a telephone “with the intent that the murder of a person be committed.”

Assistant Dubuque County Attorney Chris Corken said local charges will be dropped, giving way to the federal case.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office said Schmidt posted an inquiry on Craigslist on June 22, offering $10,000 for an undisclosed job. Callers were told upfront about a murder-for-hire job that paid $10,000.
