KEARNEY, Neb/ — A former church youth leader faces two additional counts of sexually assaulting boys on Sept. 1, 2002, in Kearney.
Thomas Anthony Jones, 37, of Kearney was charged Monday in Buffalo County Court with third-degree sexual assault of a child and first-degree sexual assault, both felonies. Jones was arrested on the new charges Friday night.
Jones was a volunteer youth leader at Lighthouse Foursquare Church. However, he hasn’t been a youth leader for several years.
According to court records, a now-18-year-old man reported that when he was in a youth group in 2006, Jones inappropriately touched him and talked to him about his genitalia.
In another incident, a now-26-year-old man reported that in 2002 he and Jones had a consensual sexual relationship. The man said the relationship began when he was 13 or 14. State law says it is illegal for someone younger than 16 to give consent to sex.
The relationship ended, records say, when the boy stopped attending the church when he was a high school senior.
Jones must post 10 percent of $25,000 bail to be released from the Buffalo County Jail. He remained in custody Tuesday morning.
He is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Jones also faces two counts of felony sexual assault of a child on Jan. 1, 2001, in Kearney while he was the youth leader. That case is pending in County Court.
