Local schools prepare for tournament, bowl game; students compete in poetry slam and more

Robotics tournament: The Vex Robotics Tournament will be held in the King Science and Technology Magnet Center’s gymnasium, 3720 Florence Blvd., Saturday. Thirty middle and high school robotics teams take part in the Nothing But Net challenge at 11 a.m., and 21 elementary teams will compete in the Create Jr. Division’s Submarine Survival at 12:45 p.m.

Roncalli Tip-off: Roncalli High School Winter Sports Tip-off is Monday from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. The Roncalli band, cheer and dance teams will perform in the gymnasium. The public is invited. There will be free chili and chili dogs. In-kind donations are welcome and may be made that evening.

Poetry slam: Omaha Public Schools middle-school students competed in the district’s Annual Fall Poetry Slam at the Pizza Shoppe restaurant in the Benson area Thursday. Special guest poet Felicia Webster, also known as “Withlove, Felicia,” performed for students and served as one of the judges for the contest. The event was sponsored by the OPS Gifted and Talented Office.

Public forum on education: The Papillion-La Vista school board will host a forum for parents and community members on the school district’s strategic plan at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Papillion-La Vista High School. Current goals are focused on individualized learning plans, early childhood education, International Baccalaureate programs, students’ social and emotional needs and world languages.

“A Walk in the Woods”: Prairie Wind Elementary School’s drama students performed “A Walk in the Woods” for the public Thursday. The show was an adventure into American fables and Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Dinner was served before the performance.

LPS learning lunch: “Makerspaces and Other Wonders of LPS Libraries,” the November Lincoln Public Schools Learning Lunch, will be presented at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the district office. Makerspaces, also referred to as hackerspaces and fablabs, are do-it-yourself spaces where people can gather to create and learn. Markerspaces are often in libraries.

Math tutoring: University of Nebraska at Omaha Math Noyce Scholars offered math tutoring during Liberty Elementary School’s Math and Science Family Night on Thursday.

Sacred Heart School honors veterans: Students, staff and families at Sacred Heart School welcomed visiting veterans for their second annual “Take a Veteran to School Day” assembly Nov. 11. More than 20 veterans attended the assembly in the school gym/cafeteria. Many of the vets are family and friends of Sacred Heart students and staff. Sacred Heart students prepared songs to sing, cards, posters and banners to show their appreciation to the veterans.

Winter clothing drive: Treynor Middle School/High School, 102 E. Main St. in Treynor, Iowa, is conducting a winter clothing drive during November. Items may be left in containers at the principals’ offices.

Holiday Bowl: The Lincoln Southeast High School marching band has been invited to perform at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. It will join marching bands from across the country in the halftime show finale of this college bowl game. To help the school’s fundraising efforts, contact R.J.
