Omahan caps off yearlong charity effort by giving car to man in need

An Omaha man has capped off 365 days of charity work by donating a car to a man in need.

Last week, Mickey Manley gave a 1993 Acura to a resident of the Siena-Francis House. Manley said he got help from Exclusive Repair, an Omaha auto shop, in finding the car and fixing it up.

He vowed last July to carry out an act of charity every day for a year. The pledge has included cleaning veterans’ graves, volunteering at a nursing home and donating small amounts of money to local charities.

He said that through most his life he never did much to help others, but his attitude started to change when his father died in 2013.

His dad’s death made him reflect on his own role in life and what he could do to help others.

Three years ago Manley and two friends started a nonprofit, We Can Make a Difference, and they began distributing bottled water, socks and other items to homeless people in downtown Omaha.

Manley, a local insurance agent, has helped homeless people in other ways, too, including providing and serving lunches at the Siena-Francis House.

Manley said he took on the yearlong charity effort to encourage others to volunteer or donate, and got a response. Friends helped him clean graves, for example, and family members helped serve food at the shelter.

Rod Bauer, director of day services at the Siena-Francis House, said Manley has a big heart for helping others.

“He simply understands that some people are dealt really bad cards and maybe he was dealt better cards and wants to help,” Bauer said., 402-444-1122
