COUNCIL BLUFFS — Iowa Western Community College was one of 28 programs across Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin to receive a College Success grant from the Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corp.

The corporation awarded $4.5million in College Success grants to college programs that provide specialized help to keep more students enrolled and on track academically, socially and financially to reach completion.

At Iowa Western, most of the $214,190 grant will go toward three new college success advisers to work with students who are the first in their family to attend college.

“They are proactive advisers that have programming, workshops, one-on-one meetings and weekly contact with a cohort group of students in programs where GPA and completion were a little bit low,” said Tori Christie, vice president of student services at Iowa Western. “These advisers would make sure these students are academically prepared and they’re going to class.”
