Iowan, 85, killed in car-semi crash

An 85-year-old man died Tuesday in a car-semitrailer truck accident in west-central Iowa that also left another man injured.

The Iowa State Patrol said Donald Wetzel of Guthrie Center, Iowa, was killed in the 5:40 p.m. wreck on Iowa Highway 25 north of 130th Street in Guthrie County.

The patrol said a 2007 Volvo semi driven by Duane Putney, 60, of Stuart, Iowa, was backing into a farm drive off Highway 25 from the south at the time of the crash. Putney’s semi occupied both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, the patrol said, and the vehicle’s flashers and headlights were on.

Wetzel’s 2008 Chevrolet Impala was southbound when it struck the trailer part of Putney’s semi. The Chevy ended up under the semi’s trailer, the patrol said.

Putney, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to the Guthrie County Hospital, the patrol said. Wetzel also was wearing a seat belt.
