There was a problem reporting this.
Once again, those that have sworn an oath to serve and protect and, in so doing, sometimes put their life on the line for us, are the suspects and the convicted felon - now at room temperature - is the “innocent” party - all because of the color of his skin.
This is so tiresome. Back the Blue. 🇺🇸
But why did he have to die? regardless of color think of it this way for a moment please; He was an american. he didn't make the right choice in reaching for his gun, but a well trained cop should be able to deal with that situation without someone dying. Regardless of color, american cops should go through better training so less AMERICANS die. There is better other first methods of dealing with the situation other than shooting. This is tiresome, you're completely right. The justice system in this country is very flawed. It is about the color of his skin though as unfortunate as that is, but ultimately this is about making change to this corrupt system. Mr Jones should have made it out alive. Why shouldn't he have?
It doesn’t matter if he was black, white, purple, or green. Reaching for a gun while disobeying police will result in sad situations like this. The man would have made it out alive if he didn’t go for the gun. He made the choice to grab the gun, the police did what they had to. End of story. Sorry somebody had to die, but it was his own actions that led to his death.
Faith, please share these "other first methods of dealing with the situation" when an uncooperative person is armed with a handgun and in the process of pulling it out. Officers jobs are to protect and serve but not sacrificing their lives at the hands of armed criminals.
I would love to. They had dragged him from the car, they would have been close enough to tackle him and disarm him or at the very least use a taser on him and then disarm him. Because thats what they're supposed to be trained to do. Shooting, let alone shooting to kill is supposed to be a last resort. I understand your argument, I do, however there are other ways police offices are supposed to be trained before using a fire arm. This is partly their fault but mostly the fault of the system that didn't train them well enough.
This will surely be an exercise in futility but that never stopped me…

He didn’t have to. He CHOSE to risk death and lost.

I see. If he was Kenyan, it would have been different.
> he didn't make the right choice in reaching for his gun
That’s a “given”. If he had truly wished to stay alive, he would have made a better choice.
>> but a well trained cop should be able to deal with that situation without someone dying. <<
Really? If you have something to offer law enforcement in the way of improving their techniques and processes in this regard you might consider offering your service to them.
>> Regardless of color, american cops should go through better training so less AMERICANS die. <<
Your specification does not bode well for non-citizens.
>> There is better other first methods of dealing with the situation other than shooting. <<
I assume you are referring to the flashing, emergency lights; loud speakers; shouted commands to comply/surrender including harsh language. These things were tried first and had little effect. Resisting arrest - IN ITSELF - is a crime.
>> This is tiresome, you're completely right. <<
Except you and I are fatigued by completely different things: You by the statistically rare cop killing of a criminal and I by the automatic, immediate, knee-jerk blaming first of law enforcement.
> The justice system in this country is very flawed.
I disagree. Everything can be improved but you cannot cite empirical evidence that the system is “very” flawed.
>> It is about the color of his skin though as unfortunate as that is <<
It certainly SEEMS so given the cop killing of white criminals resisting arrest doesn’t make headlines despite more of them dying in this manner.
> …this is about making change to this corrupt system.
The system is NOT corrupt as a whole.
As long as there are criminals, there will be law enforcement. These are two, completely opposing things in direct confrontation. There is constant conflict. Given both sides are armed with deadly weapons, there will always be deaths. If there is a choice as to which “side” of the conflict survives, I side with law enforcement - The Good Guys.
> Mr Jones should have made it out alive.
No. He chose to take his chances resisting arrest in the face of armed law enforcement and lost. Had he complied with the officers, he’d be alive today.
> Why shouldn't he have?
That you and others think as you write bodes poorly for our future. This is far more concerning than the statistically rare death of someone during a police encounter. 🇺🇸
Faith, first off thank you for your "civil" response. I wish others on these forums could discuss and debate without resorting to nastiness. In regards to your suggestion that he should not have been pulled from the vehicle, I'm not sure what else the officers could have done if the person refused to step out. Orders can only be given and refused so many times before other actions are taken, especially when dealing with a vehicle with several other people inside. As far as tackling a person armed with a firearm, this is not an option and officers are not trained for this to be an option. Over 40 officers have been shot and killed this year so far and the number would be much higher if that technique were taught. Tackling someone and being able to disarm them or restrain both their arms quickly is very difficult to do. Same thing with shooting them in the leg or trying to just "wing" them. Officers are trained to shoot center mass to stop the immediate threat to themselves or others. Now we do not yet know all the details from this tragic event, but if a person is armed and threatens an officer or another citizen, they are going to be shot.
Why do I feel like none of those people have jobs.
Because you have a sever bias against protesters, simple.
They have nothing to protest regarding this incident.
Normally in these types of stories the media will have a photo of the victim wearing his graduation cap or holding a child. This situation the only photo of Mr Jones appears to be a previous booking photo from jail. Not a good look for Mr Jones.
If BLM mattered they would be outside Plan Parenthood protesting as the number one cause of death for blacks is abortion and the founder created it in hopes of destroying the black race. But yes cops are bad.
Why does that matter? Also are you the person putting signs up at lewis and clark that say "Abortion is Black Genocide"? Planned Parenthood is so much more than abortions, and please cite your evidence about the founder. One more thing, No uterus, no opinion. If you don't like abortions get a vasectomy. Yes ACAB <3
Nothing to protest here. Man went for a gun. Skin color is irrelevant. Police did what they had to do. End of story. Nothing to protest here. This is getting old, don’t pull a gun on the police and obey their orders to put your hands up, and you won’t get shot. Pretty simple. Again, nothing to protest. Cut and dry situation. The End.
I guess the First Amendment gives these protesters the right to look and act stupid in public. Almost 100% of the citizens do not like these protests but don't counter protest. These protesters should give thanks the police are here because I am sure if there were no consequences or police the protesters would be in great peril from the rest of the citizens.
I support the protestors. BLM!
Contact the Omaha city council and tell them to vote NO on the police union contract.
Not enough civilian oversight.
Do not agree with BLM but do agree with the union contracts for all professions. Teachers too.
I support and love Blacks. I don't support the marxist communist BLM organization and most Blacks probably don't have a clue that's what the organization is all about.
Their logo is literally the communist fist.
How is BLM marxist? Please explain and cite reliable sources. I look forward to your reply.
Faith- BLM is a Marxist organization that wants to overthrow the capitalist system, destroy America, and replace it. Their founder has even openly said they are Marxist.
Here’s more, Faith. Most people don’t even know what BLM stands for, including you.
Hey Faith, the Marxism of BLM has been explained and cited. Mr. Redelfs also gave very good detailed explanations to your other questions. I look forward to your reply. If you have one.
Ditto!! I'm very disappointed that we seem to be the only one it this comments section that give a heck about human rights. BLM! ACAB <3
On the contrary, you look pretty stupid exercising your first amendment rights on the internet :) No one like these protests because it's 2020 and you think everyone would be over racism by now, but they're not so thats why we protest. If there were no consequences or police are you suggesting that you would assault protesters for exercising their first amendment rights? If there weren't any police there the protest would go smoother and there would be less tension. Best wishes Mr. Waterman
Yeah, throwing things, breaking windows, starting fires, blocking streets, and looting are very ‘peaceful protests’. The police should definitely let this continue at all costs.
Once again, Omaha's new crop of "professional protesters" have a cause. And once again they look like people who have nothing else to do.
Chief S. should have said we will conduct an open and complete investigation in this matter. Condolences is silly but politically correct. People who are out for a Thursday evening drive strapped with an illegally possessed weapon does not earn sympathy. eol
I wonder if all you professional MAGAs said the same thing about the "millions" of MAGA protesters in DC?....Doubt it....
Joe Biden; Super Creep:
So what's your point? Your comment has nothing to do with the article. You are deranged. Since you went there....speaking of creeps:
Jean Stothert's crack OPD pulled another Farnam St shuffle last night.
Why were they pulled over? Why were they told to stop reaching? I have been pulled over in the past and have never been told to stop reaching even though I was getting my registration out of the glove box. Not blaming the police, just questions I have.
Well the article does say no license plate on the front of the vehicle.
This traffic stop was 99.9% survivable (regardless of race).
The deceased controlled the outcome, end of story.
These protests are making commentary on the long history of mistreatment of black and brown bodies by the police starting in the 1700's with slave patrols. One only has to listen to black, brown, and indigenous people to know they live in fear every day of what the police will do for ordinary acts such as minor traffic violations. Michael Eric Dyson said, "The crime is not what we do but who we are." I do not understand why it is so hard to understand how history has shaped our current policing system and the realities of racism in our country and not demonize all police officers or all protestors who are asking for us to do better. What ever happened to dialectical thinking?
Shooting someone who is reaching for a gun is not ‘mistreatment’. Police may be more wary when stopping a black, but blacks have done nothing to change that reputation because people like this man keep going for guns when contacted by police. Obey the police, and don’t reach for guns, and people will stop getting shot by police. Pretty simple.
WTF are you babbling about? The 1700's? Omaha was founded in like the 1850's or '60's.
The past of 100, 200, and/or 300 years ago is the past and nothing more. The made up crimes the marxists keep barking about to whip the crowds into a frenzy are nothing more than an attack on all Americans...a coordinated effort to destabilize our constitutional republic.
I struggle to understand why BLM only is concerned when police involved yet no concern about the black on black shootings that happen something like 98% of the time?
BLM is a proxy group meant to discredit the police and replace them with the leftist model. It’s about power. The protestors are just pawns.
Marxism is the evil they seek to bring into power here.
The story clearly states there is both body & dash cam footage. Which cant be made public until the investigation has been done. This is a very sad, tragic event, lets not make it worse than it has to be, let the investigation run it's course.
Why does everyone's emotions need to babysat - no one is above the law. When an officer asks to comply - do it, it's for everyone's safety. Stop creating the issue and their will be no problem. Duh -
There are two questions here. Why was car stopped? Most likely driving while black. 2nd question is more complicated. You are a felon with a gun, round chambered. Why? That said, why fight? If you get out of car hands in air you have a chance, not a certainty of staying alive. You will go to prison but you are not dead. Fight, you have certain outcome of death.
“ Most likely driving while black “ that’s a pretty ignorant assumption and is part of the problem.
Ignorance? I live in northo. I see it all the time.
You see it all the time? How exactly is this and how did you determine they were stopped for driving while black???
I think everyone of all colors has had enough of this lawlessness. The guy had a .45 in his belt and reached for it, what did u expect the police to do? Wait till they get shot then respond? Everyone carries an unregistered .45 in their waist band, don't they?
If, and this is a BIG “if” because it is anything but certain, the goal is to to stay alive, when someone points a gun at you, you do what they say.
It’s time to start teaching your babies to comply when confronted by a gun. Less than that means you are likely to die. Perhaps that is the ultimate, if subconscious, intent in most of these sad killings: Suicide by cop.
Submit. Comply. Do not resist. You may end up as Grossberger’s girlfriend but, at least, you’ll be alive. So far, I’m mostly convinced that staying alive was NOT first on the mind of most of these foolish, deceased folks.
If black lives don’t really matter to blacks, the slogan sure isn’t going to mean much to others. 😢
I guess we have a case of ‘Faith No More’ after a few people spew facts her way.
