Nancy’s Almanac, Nov. 19, 2014: Valentine sets record cold stretch

The northern Sand Hills have never recorded a colder Nov. 10-16 than this year, if temperature readings at Valentine are any indication.

Valentine has seen its coldest Nov. 10 to Nov . 16 since record-keeping began in 1889, said Darren Snively, meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in North Platte.

For those dates, the community has averaged a temperature of 10.6 degrees, two degrees below the previous record of 12.6 degrees set in 1940. A 2-degree change in that type of record is significant, he said.

Included in the cold stretch are individual days that set record lows:

13 degrees below zero on Saturday, Nov. 15, broke the record of -10 set on that date in 1997.

-13 on Sunday, Nov. 16, broke the record of -12 set on that date in 1955.

-14 on Tuesday, Nov. 18, broke the record of 0 degrees last set in 1969.

Another indication of how extraordinary the past week has been in Valentine is the 6.4 inches of snow that fell Nov. 15.

Based on typical record-setting snowfalls for mid-November, that should have been a record. But not on that particular date:

• The record snowfalls for Nov. 14 and Nov. 16, respectively, days are 3.9 inches and 5 inches.

• The record for Nov. 15 is a whopping 13.5 inches.

“They picked a bad day to get that much snow,” Snively said.

The extreme cold is due to Siberian and arctic air that has been pouring into the central U.S.
