Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts has picked a funeral director to serve as Douglas County election commissioner.

Brian Kruse will replace former Election Commissioner Dave Phipps, who was appointed to that position in 2005 by then-Gov. Dave Heineman and reappointed in 2007 and 2011. Phipps' term expires at the end of this year.

Under state law, the governor appoints the election commissioners for Douglas, Sarpy and Lancaster Counties. They are full-time positions.

Phipps earned $79,369 in 2014.

Kruse, a longtime Republican, currently works as a funeral director at Braman Mortuary in Omaha.

Kruse has been active in GOP politics, often serving in volunteer campaign positions. Most recently, he was treasurer for State Sen. Beau McCoy's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign in 2014.

In addition, Kruse once worked as an assistant administrator for the unclaimed property division in the Nebraska Treasurer's Office.

Kruse's job begins on Jan. 1.
