An accident on the Kennedy Freeway near L Street closed the southbound lanes of the highway Tuesday evening, bringing rush hour traffic to a crawl in the area.
A 1996 Jeep Wrangler hit a concrete barrier just after 5 p.m., overturned, slid across the L Street exit ramp and hit a metal utility pole, which fell onto the Jeep. The southbound lanes of the highway were briefly closed, before one lane was opened and traffic resumed.
The driver, Paul Burkhart, 32, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with a head injury that was non-life-threatening, said Officer James Shade, an Omaha Police spokesman.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was the only occupant of the vehicle, Shade said, and neither alcohol nor speed were believed to be a factor in the crash.
