Firefighters battled a stubborn house fire in South Omaha early Thursday that cast a pall of smoke over the downtown area.
The fire was reported about 2:45 a.m. at the vacant home near 14th and Hickory Streets.
No injuries were reported, Douglas County dispatchers said.
A very slight breeze apparently pushed smoke from the fire north into downtown. That smoke may have been heavy enough to set off smoke alarms in a building at 10th and Douglas Streets around 3:15 a.m.
Alarms at neighboring homes also were tripped by the thick smoke.
Later Thursday morning, firefighters were called back to the home when the fire reignited.
