Though Nebraska’s Republican primary election is still more than seven months away, a local organization is pushing for voters to register now.

The League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha will hold events around the Omaha area today as part of National Voter Registration Day. Nebraska Republicans will hold their presidential primary on May 10. Democrats will hold caucuses on March 5.

League members will help people register to vote or update their information. The events — many on college campuses — target students who might be first-time voters.

Ann Chalson, voter services director of the League of Women Voters, said the event is designed to “get as many people participating as possible.”

Voter registration will be available at eight Omaha metro locations. Chalson said any Nebraska resident can register at the event, regardless of his or her home county.

Registration will be available at the following locations:

» Creative Center Art College, 10850 Emmet St., Omaha, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

» Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing and Allied Health, 720 N. 87th St., Omaha, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

» South Omaha Library, 2808 Q St., Omaha, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

» University of Nebraska at Omaha Milo Bail Student Center, 6001 Dodge St., Omaha, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

» Metropolitan Community College, Fort Omaha Campus, Building 10 Commons, 5370 N. 30th St., Omaha, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
