A mother and daughter from Afton, Iowa, were killed Thursday in a crash on the north side of town, and a Southwestern Community College official was injured.

The accident happened about 5 p.m. as Sierra Peddycoart, 19, was traveling north on Highway 169 in a 2003 Chrysler Sebring. Her mother, Lori Anderson, 51, was riding with her.

According to the Iowa State Patrol: Peddycoart stopped for a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. Highway 34. She apparently did not see a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling east on Highway 34 and pulled into the intersection. The Tahoe’s driver, Beth Kulow, was unable to avoid the collision.

Peddycoart and Anderson died from their injuries, the patrol said.

Kulow, 30, and her passenger, Kinsley Knutstrom, 2, both of Creston, were taken by ambulance to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.

Kulow is dean of student services at Southwestern Community College in Creston. She is also the regional hub manager for Gov. Terry Branstad’s STEM advisory board.
